My Rule of Eight

Lots of things are happening yet I could not find any reason to write about them. My lazy self roared out of its stupor.

So. I’ve been tagged. This might be a good way to get started yet again. This is the first time I’ve read about this, thanks to Ivan for tagging me.

Rule of Eight: Write 8 facts/things/habits about yourself, saying who tagged you. In the end you need to choose the 6 people to be tagged and list their names.

1. It wasn’t until I was thirteen when I realized that I could never have an older brother. I don’t know what it happened, but it took me 13 years to accept the fact that time won’t step back so my folks could have a child before me, hence a big brother. I guess that is one of those unattainable things on my shortlist. In my mind there is a picture of this person who will scold me when I cause him trouble but still ruffle my hair playfully, and think I’m incorrigible but still look out for me. I could never have that. Too bad.

2. When you are a lone child, you tend to rely on no one but yourself. Short of saying I have trust issues, I do not think I could ever reach your average comfort level with people. From the most basic practice like working on a group work at school back then, I was more comfortable working alone. Teamwork was never my strongest suit and something I had to work on. (I think I made progress.) One of my reasons? If I fail, I would have no one to blame but myself. Having others to blame would only make me bitter. And bitter is the last thing I ever want to be. As for secrets. Well, they are secrets. They are meant to be kept, not shared.

3. As much as I liked Manny Pacquiao back THEN, now I hate him. He has become cocky. His head got as large as his ‘estate’ and as bloated as his bank account. I actually wished he would lose last week. I should have tossed the wishing coin on the well. I think he just made an insult to music with his repetitive album and his constant declaration of doing it ‘for the country’ when he is the one getting richer in the process. I am close to bashing the telly because of the proliferation of his endorsements from tuna to socks to detergent to a fastfood chain to a telecom company to pain relievers to sports gear to…..ugh! There is such a thing as saturation point. Him doing an ad for the Bench Denim Line or Bench Body would be the last straw. That is it, I am going Amish.

4. I want to go back to high school; a time I consider is still the best in my life. Not the puberty stage, not the baptisms of fire I got in the many fields I ventured into since then. No, it is mainly about the people I shared it with. Truth be told, I could forego getting to know everyone else, except those 45 peeps I spent all those 4 glorious years with. For all their flaws and imperfections, they made those times perfect.

5. I was a Girl Scout when I was in primary school. One of the loyal ones. Many of the things I know now I learned through all those Friday lunchtime meets. I even got to be Mayor at 12 years old. Fun! In High School I didn’t get into it. Politics came in. I hate politics. (Or at least what it has become. Theoretically it is still a good thing, a vital element in society. But application is different from theory.)

6. Countless times I tried reading the Bible, but never got further than the first few chapters of Deuteronomy. I do not even remember what Deuteronomy was all about, so technically, I never got beyond Exodus. (and I love books. *shakes head*)

7. The Roman Catholic Church is the most corrupt corporate body on the planet. Period. (I am Catholic. But I believe in God, NOT the Church. There’s a diff.)

8. The one thing I like the most about being ME? Control. Not control over others or over circumstances, because those are things you can never fully control but only to a certain extent. It is having control over my emotions, my thoughts, my actions. I have never gone haywire just yet, and I hope I never will. At the rate I am going, it never will.

Punches I’d Like To Throw

BOXING may very well be declared as the National (Spectator) Sport of the Philippines – replacing Basketball – at the rate things are going, what with virtually the entire country going gaga over it and the country’s crème de la crème, Manny “The Pacman” Pacquiao. (website)

Yesterday he just defeated Mexico’s legenday Eric “El Terible” Morales by way of technical knockout at the start of the 10^th round. It was a rematch, something Manny wanted since Morales defeated him by split decision several months ago. He was out to reclaim what he – and every other professional boxer – rightfully owns.

I sat through it, one: because I had no other choice. My little black book (as if I had one) was unsurprisingly blank for the weekend and I had no intention of going out since ‘out’ has lately become synonymous with ‘unnecessary spending’. Two…Well, I was curious. And there is some thrill to be derived from watching two ‘presumably’ sane people slug each other’s faces. The Tagalogs refer to it as “basagan ng bungo”, which literally translates to ‘skull-bashing’. In yesterday’s case, especially in Morales’, it was more like ‘nose-bashing’. But hey, what the hell. Win or lose, they get tons of money out of it. What’s a little reconstructive surgery afterwards? (I wish you could hear the sarcasm. It drips.)

A few nights ago, way in the middle of a four-hour night class, our lecturer noted the anticipation leading up to last Sunday’s Las Vegas match. You see, it was highly publicized. It is literally the talk of the town. On the telly was splashed Manny’s unassuming face, with the catch-phrase “PARA SA BAYAN” (For the nation/country/motherland). Anyway, our lecturer, Sir Mike Tiu balked at the phrase. After all, it has technically turned into a one-country-against-one-Mexican bout. At least that’s how the promotions made it sound like. He had a suggestion. Why not line up all the politicians and officials and have Manny do them in with his fists, one at a time? Now THAT would be for the country. (Bingo. That sounded more humane than my plan of asking for a nuke from North Korea, although the nuke would look more spectacular when viewed from outer space.)

Not to discredit Manny Pacquiao or to throw a shadow to his good (if they are) intentions, but I think the use of the phrase is slightly overdone. No, not slightly. It IS overdone. Totally unnecessary. He says the words like he really meant them. Perhaps he does, but there is also the implication that he is doing it ONLY for the country. Hmmm. Broken noses and cut face aside, he’ll get loads of money. Add to that the inflow of income from promotions here at home (at present he has promotional deals with a canned tuna, sports socks, sports underwear, pain reliever, multivitamins, detergent, and two others. All that is lacking is with a telecom company.) and he has an ALBUM! He sings! However, in my opinion, American Idol reject William Hung can do vocal gymnastics around him anytime. (OK, that was an exaggeration, but Manny’s singing should be restricted in an auditorium. With only his loyal fans to listen. And I do mean his MOST loyal fans.) What is more, once he gets home, he will get a heroes’ welcome, something I would not refute, I would probably even welcome him if I lived anywhere near Manila. But for sure the President would give him more cash prize. As if he is not already loaded.

One thing that is good about this whole thing, though: a simple boxer from the provinces has managed to do what any leader could do (unless you’re a religious leader). He has managed to unite a divided people, if only for an hour. Everyone is also home, the streets are bare except for a sprinkling of people here and there. Wow! Talk about peace and quiet! (Plus, the number of ‘thieves’ in the country were reduced, because there were various congressmen plus the First Gentlemen who went to Vegas to watch the fight.)

Of course, when the match ended, there was pandemonium. Of two kinds: the rejoicing kind. The other kind? Disgruntled. They just lost money when they put their stakes on Morales. Phew!

GAMBLING can also be considered in the running for the National Sport. It is dishing out money without having your nose punched in and going under the knife.

Anyway, after all that, Congratulations and Mabuhay!

Marky Cielo, Sole Survivor?

Do we have our Starstruck Sole Survivor?

In a live voting last night on national television, the ten finalists were asked who they think would be the Sole Survivor when the season ends. Nine out of the ten voted unanimously for MARKY. Marky did not go for self-voting and voted for his friend Cebuano BUGZ DAIGO.

Is this a sign? Marky started slow in the competition, his admission of being part of the Igorot minority earning him mixed reactions from everyone. Soon he proved that he can do more than meets the eye. He ranked 3rd in their first crash acting test (among the boys), was named BEST DANCER by Douglas Nierras, BEST PERFORMER IN A MUSIC VIDEO by Direk Freddie and has repeatedly wowed fans, slowly winning them over to his court.

Although it is still a bit too early to be concluding anything (there are still nine remaining finalists after Sara Larsson got the boot last night, and still more or less seven weeks to go before the winner is named – ample time for anyone and everyone to show their chops) I am hoping he stays his ground and strong foothold.

About damn time real talent wins out and a true-blue Pinoy gets recognition.

THE REVIEW

There is one scene in this film that singularly made a lasting impression on me, and it involved no dialogue. The two main characters Aguiluz and Alwina, who have just been wed by the Queen of Lireo, run out of the hall and take to the skies. Arms tight around each other, they twirl and twirl in the heavens, where they share a gentle and deep kiss. I do not know much about avian methods of procreation but I reckon this scene is a subtle rendition of how this race of half-birds, half-humans make love. Not a lot of movement involved, no melodramatic pledging of emotions but the way they held each other and simply shared the moment spoke volumes where the only other sound to be heard is the flapping of their wings (and the soundtrack, but I do not think I noticed it. I simply stared.)

Mark Angelo Cadaweng Cielo of Bauko, Mt. Province. Attended primary school in Butuan, Agusan del Sur. Graduated high school at San Isidro High School in Buguias, Benguet. Currently taking up BS Architecture at the Saint Louis University (my alma mater) in Baguio. 17 years young, currently fighting strong in the Top 11 of the star search on GMA 7,Starstruck.

Early on, his dance background makes him stand out. His acting ability noticed by the directors and creators alike (give him decent screen time, won’t you?), and his uniqe charisma slowly but surely earning him more support.

New Year, New Blog. New Me?

My Xanga blog is too clean. I’d prefer to keep it that way.

My Multiply blog is wholesome and wholistic. I prefer to keep it that way.

Hence, this one.

Hopefully on this one I will be able to let myself go. After all, there is no better place to be myself and still maintain anonymity. The word ‘privacy’ is now debatable so I deviate from using it.

The basics about me. Female. Just turned 24. A bean-counter (although my stubborn nature refuses to live up to the Western definition of what a bean counter is). A proud Igorot. A perfect example of the Creator’s mix of good sense and wry sense of humor (I am just presuming here.). Flawed, and loving it. Mastering the art of living. Barely halfway there, but I am in no rush.
